Madras HC orders CBI Probe in escape of Koreans from Tamil Nadu Jail

The Madras High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to initiate a probe into the matter of the escape of two citizens of South Korea from the Custody of the Tamil Nadu Police.

The two South Korean nationals named Choe Jae Won aged 42 and Choi Yung Suk aged 47 are the General Manager and Managing Director of Chowel India Private Limited.

The two Accused were Arrested in June 2019 from Kancheepuram District of Tamil Nadu, the two are currently facing Charges of Goods and Service Tax (GST) fraud under Section 69 of the CGST Act, 2019.

The two South Korean nationals were first held in Puzhal Central Prison and were sent to Foreigners Detention Camp in Trichy in November 2019.

The duo had filed a Petition in the High Court in April 2020, asking for permission under which they can live in their own residence due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The High Court rejected their Plea, however allowed them to live in their residence under house Arrest.

The Madras High Court was informed by the Tamil Nadu Government that the duo had escaped the house Arrest and that they may have used forged documents to travel to South Korea Illegally via Manipur.

The Chowel India Private Limited which is known for making Cowl bar, bumper and seat frames for Motor Vehicles, faces Charges of fraud by taking Goods and Services Tax (GST) from their customers but not remitting the same to the Government, thereby committing a fraud of INR 40 Crores.
