BACKGROUND: During the 1975-77 Emergency, he defended socialist leader George Fernandes in the infamous Baroda dynamite case. He received the release of Mizo underground leader, Laldenga, in a 1979 conspiracy. After that, he was the constitutional adviser to the Mizo National Front underground during negotiations with the Government of India. Many years of negotiations led to the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord, which he drafted on June 30, 1986, which ended 20 years of uprising. He was appointed the first Advocate General of Mizoram, who was Prime Minister of Law in 1987 at the age of 34. He was the youngest attorney general who had ever been an attorney in the country. He is an expert in the northeastern region of India and its problem of sedition.
