A Division Bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee of the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Republic TV anchor Arnab Goswami and other co-accused in the 2018 abetment of suicide case.

The Court asserted that the High Court “was in error in rejecting the application for grant of interim bail.”

The Court passed the order in the Marathon Hearing session conducted from 11 am to 4:15 pm today.

The accused got the order from the Court to provide RS. 50,000 for temporary bail bond which has been issued therewith.

Supreme Court, Justice Chandrachud stated,

“If this court does not interfere today, we are travelling on the path of destruction. Forget this man (Goswami). You may not like his ideology. Left to myself, I will not watch his channel.”

He further said, “Keep aside everything. If this is what our state governments are going to do to people who are to be nailed, then the Supreme Court has to intervene.”

Furthermore, Justice Chandrachud exclaimed, “There has to be a message to the High Courts- Please exercise your jurisdiction to uphold personal liberty. We are seeing case after case. High Courts are failing to exercise jurisdiction. People are in jail for tweets!”

Arnab Goswami was arrested for a criminal case of abetment to suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik in 2018.
