Modi Government in order to improve road safety in India, amended the Motor Vehicles Act last year. Central Government increased penalties which ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹25,000 for violating traffic rules.
Modi Government proposed to increase cameras in traffic for better surveillance. Government has increased penalties rate to ensure stricter enforcement of the amended MV Act, From 1st of October 2020 if a traffic camera detects you jumping red light, a automated challan of ₹1,000 will be issued which was earlier ₹100 to ₹300 .
Government recent change in issuing vehicle Registration cards (RCs) and driving licenses (DLs) in the country. It is likely that you would have to update your driving licenses.
Red light jumping
For red light jumping the traffic police can now, as per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules issue a challan amount of ₹1,000. Based on traffic personnel’s discretion you can also be held for Rash or negligent Driving and can lend you jail for six months to one year and a fine of at least ₹1,000 and up to ₹5,000.
Update in DL and RC
A new driving license will be issued with advanced microchip features like Quick Response (QR) code and Near Field Communication (NFC).
Government will make a data base to retain records and penalties of the DL holder up to 10 years on the centralised online database.
This process is also starting from 1st of October 2020.
No discounts on credit card at petrol pumps
From 1st of October 2020 there will be no discount given on credit card while payment to buy fuel at petrol pumps.
Instead of this oil companies introducing discounts on debit cards and e-wallets to promote digital payments to buy fuel. Discounts on debit cards and other modes of digital payments will continue for now.
