The old custom of Orissa High Court Advocates acknowledging Chief Justice S. Muralidhar and Justice R.K. Pattanayak as ‘My Lord,’ ‘Your Lordship,’ ‘Your Honour,’ or a part of speech like ‘Hon’able’ has ended.

As per reports, the Lawyers will refer to the Court’s Bench as ‘Sir’.

The Orissa High Court restarted its work today, and the Bench was given a timeline of business for the day.

All counsel and parties involved are asked to refrain from acknowledging the Judges of this Bench as ‘My Lord,’ ‘Your Lordship,’ ‘Your Honour,’ or with the word ‘Hon’able.’ “Some other form of address, constant with Court decorum, such as ‘Sir,’ should suffice,” said the Appeal.

J K Lenka, Secretary of the Orissa High Bar Association, stated, “The Chief Justice’s action is applauded. Other Judges must obey in his footsteps. This should be followed by both Counsel and Litigants.

Senior Lawyers recalled that throughout the time in office of Chief Justice Gatikrushna Mishra, the Orissa High Court began the movement to end the practice of addressing Judges as ‘Our Lordship’ (1969-75).
