The Chief Justice of India N V Ramana on January 4, 2022 shifted the date of hearing of the case of criteria of identification for reservation of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) from January 6 to January 5, 2022, by the request of the Central Government.

The Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta had earlier on January 3, 2022 requested for the consideration of the early hearing of the case in front of the Three-Judge Bench of the Supreme Court of India which is headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud.

The Solicitor General on January 4, 2022 appeared before the Chief Justice of India and urged that the resident doctors who are supposed to receive counselling for the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) are now agitated because of the delay in the counselling.

However, the Chief Justice of India observed that the Supreme Court Benches comprising of three Judges have already been assigned with miscellaneous cases and that the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota case might get a Bench comprising of only two Judges.

The Solicitor General Tushar Mehta agreed to this and stated that a Two-Judge would be enough for the hearing of the matter as long as it is being heard on January 5, 2022.

The case is pertaining to a report submitted by a Review Committee set up by the Central Government for the perusal of the criteria for identification regarding reservation of the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in Post Graduate medical coursed under NEET that suggested by the Union Government.
