The Supreme Court rejected a petition seeking directions to the CBI to probe the incident that injured West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde directed the petitioner to appeal to the Calcutta High Court. The bench, which also included Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, allowed the petitioners’ advocate to withdraw the plea and proceed to the high court.

During the hearing, the petitioners’ lawyer, Adv Vivek Narayan Sharma, appeared and stated that they are still seeking guidance from the Election Commission about the election’s conduct. He also expressed concern that the attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was staged.

He stated,

“There is possibility of staged thing as she has been shaking her leg after the incident,”

The petition has claimed that Mamta Banerjee was purposefully manhandled by 4-5 people in front of the crowd and that it was probably a conspiracy because no police officers were present at such a large public meeting.

It further stated that in the absence of any future guidelines to control such incidents, polls will continue to be marred by such tricks used by various political parties, potentially leading to a situation in which no candidate is safe.
