The Government of Delhi eliminated its Order asking Fair Price Shops (FPS) to remain open for all seven days of the week and in a new order permitted a weekly off for Fair Price Shops owners in the city.

This was in association with the Order dated 23/9/2021 by the Delhi High Court which replaced its earlier order dated 27/04/2021 notwithstanding that Fair Price Shop owners will be allowed to have a weekly off, to enable them to function productively, the Department of Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs of the Government on Monday informed while highlighting the new Directives.

The Department of Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs of the Government further observed that “Accordingly, in compliance with the latest directions of the High Court, the instructions of the department on the distribution of food grains to beneficiaries on all seven days of the week are hereby withdrawn.”

Delhi has over 2,000 Fair Price Shops and over 17.77 lakh card holders with about 72.78 lakh beneficiaries.

Further, the Delhi Government officials highlighted that the Delhi High Court in April 2020 had informed the Government to certify the distribution of food grains from Fair Price Shops to the underprivileged people on all seven days of the week.

Free Ration is distributed by the Delhi Government under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013 and the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) through Electronic point of sale devices.

Further, under the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme, the Government has also started the distribution of rations from the month of July.
