The Allahabad High Court directed the authorities to complete the shifting process at the earliest, and in any case not later than a period of three months.

The direction came after the Court was hearing a PIL filed by Maa Ganga Pukka Mahal Trust claiming that every citizen of the city is affected apart from the tourists and demanded shifting of Monkeys from the city of Varanasi to the forest area.

The Bench adjudicated by Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice Anil Kumar Ojha stated thatThe shifting of monkeys should be done strictly as per the provisions of law and proper care be taken so that the monkeys are not in any way adversely affected in carrying out the operation.”

It was submitted before the Court by the standing counsel that the Forest Department has been requested to shift the monkeys to the forest as per the provisions of law.

It was also observed that “For this a letter was sent on 28 July 2021, waiting for necessary permission to take the monkeys to the forest area.”

In furtherance of the above, the Court observed that the District Forest Officer has already initiated action to take permission of the Chief Conservator of Forest for shifting of monkeys from the city of Varanasi.

Therefore, the Court disposed of the PIL with a direction to the Chief Conservator of Forests to decide the matter at the earliest so that the residents and tourists of Varanasi city are not affected due to danger.
