At the opening of annual assembly of health ministers of 194 member states, WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the world still remains at a dangerous situation.

Tedros set new targets for protecting people from poorer countries and urged countries to help end vaccine inequity.

While addressing the issue of vaccine inequity, Tedros told that more than 75% of the vaccines have been administered in 10 countries.

Although the Covax facility, run by WHO and the GAVI vaccine alliance, has delivered 72 million vaccine doses to 125 countries and economies, it amounts to only 1% of the population of the country.

Tedros to cope up with the issue, requested countries to donate vaccines so that 30% of the population can be vaccinated by year end thereby saving lives of at least healthworkers and reopen societies and economies.

In conclusion he said, “Together we must continue to push for vaccines to be both equitably distributed and equitably produced throughout 2021 and beyond.”
