Piyush Goyal is the current Minister of Railways; Commerce and Industry; Consumer Affairs and Food and Public Distribution. He is a member of Bharatiya Janta Party.

BACKGROUND- Piyush Goyal  was born to Late Vedprakash Goyal, an Indian politician and the Union Minister of shipping in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in India from 2001 to 2003 and also a member of the Rajya Sabha, his mother Late Chandrakanta Goyal a politician from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and three times member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

He is married to Seema Goyal an active social worker and has two children – Dhruv and Radhika, who have both graduated from Harvard University, USA.

UPBRINGING & EDUCATION- Piyush Goyal  hails from Mumbai, Maharashtra. He did his schooling at Don Bosco High School, Matunga, Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Bachelor of Commerce from H.R. College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai, Maharashtra. He is also a law graduate from Government Law College, Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was an all-India second rank holder in the CA Final exam of Chartered Accountancy.

WALK OF LIFE– Piyush Goyal started his political as a member of the Standing Committee on Finance and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence. He was an active member of the Managing Committee of the Indian Merchants Chamber. He was National Executive and National Treasurer in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he has been representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha since 2010. He was Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New, and Renewable Energy from the year 2014 to 2017. He became the Minister of Railways from the year 2017 to 2019. Mr. Goyal was given an additional charge of Finance Minister in the year 2018 due to Late Arun Jaitley’s ailment.

From the year 2019, he continued in the position of Minister of Railways and was also the Minister of Commerce and Industry. In October 2020, he was given the additional charge of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs Food & Public Distribution.

MAJOR INITIATIVES TAKEN- During his tenure, The transformational changes in India’s power sector took place by LED bulb distribution program (UJALA) for energy efficiency, and massive proliferation of renewable energy through the world’s largest renewable energy expansion program and also most comprehensive power sector reform ever (UDAY) took place.

CONTROVERSIES- In April 2018, Shirdi industries whose Chairman was Mr. Goyal until July 2010 and later on headed by his wife Seema Goyal had unpaid loans of ₹650 crores and in the year 2015 it was declared as Non-performing assets, and loans were written off. Several leaders demanded an inquiry why the company’s loans were written-off.
