BACKGROUND –

Kiran Mazumdar was born on 23rd March 1953 in Bangalore, India. She did her schooling from Bishop’s Cotton Girl’s High School. She did her BSc. in Zoology with Honors from Mount Carmel College, Bangalore University in 1973. She completed her post-graduation from Ballarat College, Melbourne University qualifying as a master brewer.

She started her company Biocon India Group in 1978, and determination when she got an IPO of Biocon in 2004, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw became the richest woman in India.She was also awarded with Padma Shri in 1989 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005, for her innovative efforts in industrial biotechnology, and many more prestigious awards.

Recently she was honored with the Othmer Gold Medal in 2014 for her contribution in development of the Indian biotechnology industry and her persistent efforts to make India a healthier place for all its inhabitants, and Recipient of EY World Entrepreneur of the Year in 2020. She was also a part of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2010, and was Ranked No. 65 by Forbes in World’s 100 Most Powerful Women in 2019.

She has been actively involved in philanthropic activities like Arogya Raksha Yojana where Biocon Foundation establishes clinics to offer clinical care, generic medicines and basic tests for those who cannot afford them. Mazumdar-Shaw Medical Foundation where she established a 1,400-bed cancer care center at the Narayana Health City campus in Bangalore.

She also contributed in education sector where she supported development and use of a basic mathematics textbook, introduced in Kannada schools .She also funded a multi-year research program by creating the Biocon Cell for Innovation Management at the Indian School of Business in 2009.

She always speaks about the importance of improving India’s infrastructure, she has contributed a lot in Bangalore’s development , and supported the Bangalore Agenda Task Force, to improve the city’s infrastructure and standard of living.

CAREER TIMELINE –

1975-1977- During this time Kiran worked as a trainee brewer at many places like in Carlton and United Breweries, Melbourne and as a trainee maltster at Barrett Brothers and Burston, Australia.

1978-Leslie wanted to establish an Indian subsidiary of his firm, and impressed Kiran’s ambition, Leslie took her on as a partner in a new venture, Biocon India, was launched in 1978 the garage of her rented house in Bangalore with a starting capital of Rs. 10,000, which produced enzymes for alcoholic beverages, paper, and other products.

Within a year Biocon India had become the first Indian company to export enzymes to the United States and Europe.

1987-In 1987, her company expanded when Narayanan Vaghul of ICICI Ventures supported creation of a venture capital fund of US$250,000, and this funding helped Biocon to expand its research and development efforts.

1989- Biocon became the first Indian biotech company in 1989 to receive U.S. funding for proprietary technologies.

1990- She incorporated Biocon Biopharmaceuticals Private Limited (BBLP) in 1990, to manufacture and market a select range of biotherapeutics in a joint venture with the Cuban Center of Molecular Immunology.

1994- In 1994 she also established Syngene which provides early research and development support services on a contract basis.

1997- In 1997 Kiran also got the Leslie share of interest.

2000- In 2000 she also established Clinigene which focuses on clinical research trials.

2003- Profits of Biocon India jumped more than 42 percent.

2004-In 2004, Mazumdar-Shaw listed Biocon on the stock market, making Biocon only the second Indian company to cross the $1-billion mark on the first day of listing.
