BACKGROUND- Jamsetji Tata was the pioneer industrialist of India. He is the founder of biggest conglomerate company of India, that is, the Tata Group. He is also the establisher of Jamshedpur, a city in Jharkhand.

Often regarded as the ‘Father of Indian Industry’, Jamsetji Tata was born in a very respectable family of priests. However, his family was not very rich. Also, even though he was from the family of priests, his father was also a businessman.

At a very young age of 14 years, Tata joined the Elphinstone College and in 1958 completed his education. After completing his education, he joined Nusserwanji Tata’s export trading firm. He helped his father a lot in establishing branches of his export- trading firm in various nations like China, Japan, USA, etc.

Till the age of 29. Jamsetji worked and helped his father. Then, he started his own trading company in 1868. After this, in the year 1969, he opened a cotton mill at Chinchpokli, Mumbai and named it as Alexander Mill. Thereafter, in 1874, he began the Central India Spinning, Manufacturing and Weaving Company in winter capital of Maharashtra, i.e., Nagpur.

Moreover, in 1885, he founded a company in Pondicherry also. However, this textile company did not venture much profit because of less demand of fabrics. Afterwards he opened mills in Kurla area of Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The mill in Ahmedabad was a high-tech mill and thus, it helped in economic growth of Ahmedabad also.

Jamsetji Tata had four goals in life which included opening of a great hotel, establishing a top-class education institution, setting up a hydro-electric plant and an iron and steel Industry. On 03/12/1903, Tata was able to fulfill one of his four Goals by opening and inaugurating the Taj Mahal Hotel, popularly known as Taj Hotel in Mumbai.

However, the rest three goals of his remained unachieved during his lifetime. His successors completed his remaining goals by setting up TISCO, IISC Bengaluru and Tata Power Company Limited. Jamshedji Tata who was a significant figure of industrial world of India died on 19/05/1904.
