BACKGROUND – He was the 26th Chief Justice of India. After serving as a judge in the Gujarat High Court, Ahmadi was appointed judge to the Supreme Court in 1988. He was then elevated to the post of Chief Justice, and served from 1994 to 1997. He served as Chancellor at the Aligarh Muslim University for two terms.

LANDMARK JUDGEMENT-

Uniform Civil Code Case-

Chief Justice Ahmadi agreed that the offence was covered by section 304A of the IPC rather than section 304 (II) of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). After the suspects were tried under section 304A and found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison, the NGOs caused a ruckus and forced the government to file a curative petition in the Supreme Court, which was rejected by a five-judge panel that upheld the Justice Ahmadi bench’s decision.

REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT- He speaks out for Muslim rights in India. He is also involved in Indian politics as a supporter of minority rights, most recently through the publication of the city-based Human Welfare Trust’s book ‘A Guide To Uplift Minorities’. Among the many honours bestowed upon him are that The American Inn of Laws has accepted him as a member, The Honourable Society of Middle Temple, London, has appointed him Honorary Master Bencher and The University of Leicester, England, awarded him the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa).
