The Supreme Court of India is expected to hear the petition seeking the Central Bureau Investigation’s (CBI) probe in the Palghar lynching case today.

The petition also demands for registration of FIR against all the police authorities for their inability to prevent the gathering of mob despite lockdown restrictions.

The Uddhav Thackeray led Maharashtra Government informed the Supreme Court that actions have been taken against the police officers who were found guilty.

On the night of 16th April 2020, two ascetics were travelling to Surat, Gujarat from Kandivali to attend a funeral. To avoid unnecessary delays in their travel, they decided to reach Gujarat through the Palghar District instead of using the Mumbai-Gujarat Highway.

Over there, the two along with the driver were attacked by a group that suspected them to be kidnappers and organ harvesters.

More than 100 people were arrested by the police for being involved in the lynching. As of 17th January 2021, a special court granted bail to around 89 persons.
