Derek O’Brien and Seven Rajya Sabha MP suspended, opposition moved resolution seeking removal of Deputy Chairman

Rajya Sabha suspended 8 MP for unruly behavior in Rajya Sabha, several opposition MPs protested against the move.

Yesterday, while protesting farm Bills, Derek climbed onto the podium, shoved the rulebook at Singh’s face, and indulged in sloganeering.

MP who were suspended are — Derek O’Brien, Sanjay Singh, Raju Satav, KK Ragesh, Ripun Bora, Dola Sen, Syed Nazir Hussain, and Elamaran Karim.

Opposition continue to protest in the Rajya Sabha, the All India TMC accused BJP of murdering democracy. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee through tweet slammed the BJP over the suspension of eight Rajya Sabha MPs.

On its social media handle, TMC tweeted: “Absolutely unbelievable! BJP (has) MURDERED democracy by ruthlessly silencing all the opposition leaders in Rajya Sabha yesterday. Citizens of the nation, raise your voice before we are completely under Narendra Modi ji’s dictatorship!”

In a separate tweet, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Suspension of the 8 MPs who fought to protect farmers interests is unfortunate and reflective of this autocratic government’s mindset that doesn’t respect democratic norms and principles. We won’t bow down and we’ll fight this fascist government in Parliament and on the streets.”

Abhishek Singhvi and KTS Tulsi drafted resolution seeking removal of Singh. He overlooked parliamentary procedures and didn’t even let diverse political parties speak against the contentious Bills.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu junked the motion. He also suspended eight members for a week for unruly behavior.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said-.”Deputy Chairman was physically threatened. He was obstructed from doing his duty. This is unfortunate and condemnable. I suggest to MPs, please do some introspection,”

Removal of Deputy Chairman

However the rules is, if a resolution seeking Rajya Sabha Chairman’s removal is passed by the majority of the members, the person can lose their office.

Such a resolution can only be furnished if a 14-days’ notice has been given, clarifying the intention of such a step.
