NGT ordered the States and UTs to form a Nodal Agency for preservation of Water

National Green Tribunal has ordered all the Union Territories (UTs) and the states to form a nodal agency to exercise the proper steps for preservation of the water bodies, which has not been taken.

Under the supervision of Chief Secretariate of Sates/UTs, nodal agency can hold the meeting of further planning to direct the district authorities for taking any action and to stock of situation until 31st January, as per the NGT’s order.

The Tribunal has asked the Central Monitoring Committee (monitor remediation of polluted river stretches) to inspect the levels of restoration of all the water bodies (3 times per year). First monitoring date will be 31st March, 2021.

The scope of the petition, filed by the petitioner Haryana resident Lt Col (retd) Sarvadaman Singh Oberoi, extended for the protection of environment.

The petition is about restoration of Ghata Lake (Gurgaon) and other 214 other water bodies and natural channels.

The petition was heard by a bench comprising NGT Chairperson Justice A.K. Goel.
