BACKGROUND – Indira Banerjee is a Judge of the Supreme Court of India and the 8th female Judge in history of Supreme Court of India. She is former Chief Justice of Madras High Court, the second woman to hold the position in India. before being elevated as a Judge of Supreme Court of India.

She was born on 24 September 1957. She did her schooling at the Loreto House in Kolkata. She pursued her higher education at the Presidency College, Kolkata and Department of Law, University of Calcutta. [7] She was enrolled as an advocate on 5 July 1985 and practised before the Calcutta High Court.

The unanimous judgment in Rajendra Diwan v Pradeep Kumar Ranibala (2019) authored by Justice Indira Banerjee holds that the Constitution gives only the union Parliament the power to make laws on the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, and a state law, such as the CRCA, could not allow for an appeal from the Rent Control Tribunal, set up under the law, to the Supreme Court.
