The Supreme Court today directed the Allahabad High Court to monitor the CBI probe being conducted into the rape and murder of the 19-year woman of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh.

On 15 October, the Supreme Court Bench comprising CJI S.A. Bobde, Justice A.S. Bopanna and Justice V. Ramasubramanian had reserved its verdict on several PILs and interventions on the issue that a fair trial for the victim shall not be possible in Uttar Pradesh.

The Hon’ble Court also stated that transfer of the case out of Uttar Pradesh shall be considered once the CBI probe is brought to a conclusion.

It also directed the High Court that all the evidence and witnesses must be given protection.

The Dalit woman had been brutally raped and murdered by the accused persons on September 14 and she passed away 2 weeks later. Atrocities against women had initiated a nation-wide protest against rapists in the wake of the Hathras incident.

The Yogi government, after being criticized for the manner in which the matter was handled as well as cremation of the victim in the dead of the night without informing the family, had ordered a CBI probe in the crime.
