Calcutta HC bans use of firecracker

The Calcutta High Court has ordered to ban the use and sale of firecrackers during Kali Puja, Chhath, and Kartik Puja. This order has come to curb pollution amid the pandemic.

Advocate Savyasachi Chattopadhyay said that the “High Court upheld the petition about banning use and sale of firecrackers during Kali Puja.”
The guidelines similar to those issued during Durga Puja ought to be followed even in Kali Puja.
Lauding the West Bengal police’s efforts to handle the crisis in Durga Puja, the bench of Justices Sanjib Banerjee and Arijit Banerjee directed the police to follow the same in the upcoming festival.
Earlier this year, the High Court had asked to prohibit the burning of firecrackers in Kali Puja and Diwali to monitor air pollution, which can affect the health of COVID-19 patients.
An association of firecracker manufacturers has asked to compensate the licensed firecracker dealers as it is their sole source of earning income. The decision to ban on use and sale would snatch away their livelihood.
