Afshan Ansari, the wife of Gangster turned politician Mukhtar Ansari, has approached the Supreme Court, since she apprehends a danger to the safety of her husband. The Mau MLA is being shifted to the Banda district jail in Uttar Pradesh from Rupnagar jail in Punjab with trials pending in certain cases in the state.
Afshan alleges imminent threat to Mukhtar’s life, and seeks intervention from the Apex Court to ensure that her husband’s life is not in jeopardy, and that a free and fair trial in the pending cases is ensured. Mukhtar has been attacked earlier as well and it is not unlikely for him to get targeted again after he is shifted to the jail in Uttar Pradesh.
Mukhtar happens to be a witness in several cases where members of the ruling party are the accused and alleges “grave pressure is being exerted to have him killed”. In her plea, Mukhtar it has been stated that, “the petitioner is in complete fear that now any time an untoward incident can happen to her husband but for protective directions passed by this Hon’ble Court.”
This comes after the Supreme Court had directed the transfer of the politician from Punjab after noting that the custody has been refused to be handed over various trivial medical grounds.
