The Supreme Court has declined to entertain an urgent plea challenging the order of the Allahabad High Court, which directed the makers of the controversial film “Adipurush” to appear before it on July 27. “Adipurush,” a cinematic retelling of the epic Ramayana, has faced criticism for its dialogues and the use of colloquial language. Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading the bench, instructed the counsel representing the film’s makers to mention the matter on Thursday.

Previously, on June 30, the Allahabad High Court had issued an order requiring director Om Raut, producer Bhushan Kumar, and dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir to attend the court hearing on July 27. The court also directed the central government to form a five-member committee to provide its opinion on the film and whether it has offended public sentiments. The order further instructed the government to review the decision to grant certification for public exhibition of the movie.

The high court additionally requested the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to submit personal affidavits, informing the court whether the film certification guidelines were followed accurately and in spirit.
