The Supreme Court of India and IIT Madras have formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the digital transformation of the Indian judiciary and enhance access to justice, according to a press release from the Supreme Court’s public relations office.

The MoU was established following Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud’s visit to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in July this year.

The collaboration between the Supreme Court and IIT Madras will focus on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies for various legal applications, such as transcription tools, summarization of page transcripts, translation tools, an exclusive streaming platform for court trials, process automation, and large language models tailored for the legal domain.

The primary objective of this MoU is to promote the digital transformation of the Indian judiciary, aligning it with the vision of creating a more efficient and technologically advanced legal ecosystem to improve access to justice.

The Supreme Court, under the leadership of Chief Justice Chandrachud, is actively championing technological enhancements to automate processes, enhance user-friendliness, and place the citizen at the center, all in an effort to enhance access to justice.

This collaboration will also include the utilization of AI tools in capacity building and training, the creation of an e-learning platform, and the development of ICT skill-building courses.

It represents a significant step forward in the incorporation of AI and technology to boost the efficiency, accessibility, and capacity building within the legal domain.
