A Special Court of Electricity imposed a penalty worth Rs 33 Lakh on the owners of a 30-room Guesthouse in Delhi for power theft.

Further the Special Judge Arul Varma of a Court at Tis Hazari awarded four power thieves with Rigorous Imprisonment for three years in three separate cases.

Furthermore, a Bombay Suburban Electric Supply (BSES) statement highlighted that “An inspection detected 26 kilowatt of direct theft of electricity in a building in central Delhi’s Daryaganj. No meter was found at the site. A 30-room guesthouse was found to be running from the premises.”

Thereafter, a power theft bill was raised against the owners as per Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission Guidelines.

Further when the owners did not pay the fine within the stipulated time frame, a First Information Report (FIR) was submitted at the Jama Masjid police station.

The Special Court stated “It is of utmost importance to underscore that it is not a mere theft, but it is one which not only causes stupendous economic loss but also jeopardises lives. Rampant electricity theft, loose and open dangling wires, which are a necessary concomitant result thereof, endanger the lives of inhabitants living nearby.”
