On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld the Delhi High Court’s decision to subordinate the Indian Olympic Association’s business to a Committee of Administrators that the high court had appointed.

After receiving an urgent request from the Indian Olympic Association, a bench made up of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Justice CT Ravikumar issued the ruling. The committee of administrators has not yet taken control of the IOA, the bench was informed. In light of this, the bench decided to keep things as they were and scheduled the case for next Monday.

Speaking on behalf of the central government, the Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, said that the nomination of the CoA was a “sensitive national matter” since it could result in the suspension of the IOA internationally. He cited it as an example of how FIFA suspended the All-India Football Federation.

The SG stated,

“In accordance with their (the International Olympic Committee’s) guidelines, it is considered an outside influence if any national body is governed by a non-elected entity. There is a 99% possibility that India will be barred from the Olympics once the administrative committee assumes control.”

He further quoted,

“This is a question of national prestige.”
