Supreme Court showed its disappointment at the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Intelligence Bureau for not responding properly to the complaints filed against harassment and threatening of judges.

The division bench comprising of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Justice Surya Kant made a devastating remark on CBI, saying “it has done nothing”.

The Court was hearing a Suo-moto case on the matter of protection of judges and Courts in the purview of the murder of Additional District Judge Uttam Anand of Jharkhand which was committed last week.

The CJI conveyed Attorney General for India KK Venugopal upon whose support the Suo-moto action was taken by the Court. Judges are not only harmed physically but also mentally by getting absurd messages on WhatsApp and by the circulation of various types of posts on social media.

The bench has directed the CBI to be present in the Court on Monday, 10th August to highlight the Court in its investigation progress in the case of the deceased Jharkhand Judge.

“Look at the unfortunate case of death of a young judge. It is State’s failure. Security should have been provided to residences of judges”, the CJI commented about the death of Judge Uttam Anand.

The bench has also directed the Union of India to give its response on the 2019 Writ Petition, which was listed with the present Suo-moto case.

The Writ Petition claimed a special protection force for the judges and Courts. The Court stated that the Centre has failed to file a counter-affidavit.

The matter will be further heard on August 9.
