Police to Initiate an Investigation into the Theft of 59 Tonnes of Beef

Kalaburagi Police have launched an Investigation into the Alleged Misappropriation of 59 Tonnes of beef seized as part of an Investigation. The Police Officers who seized the beef were Allegedly involved in the Case.

The District Police have designated an Officer with the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) to produce a Report on the matter.

According to Kalaburagi Police Commissioner YS Ravikumar, there were some anomalies in the Record of the Amount of beef Disposed of, according to a complaint submitted by an Activist.

The Commissioner stated that if there was any misappropriation, information of how it was done will be accessible following the Investigation.

In September 2021, Police seized 61 Tonnes of illegally kept meat from Taj Cold Storage in the area. “There were particular processes that had to be followed for preserving meat, which were not followed in this situation.”

Following this, a Committee was formed up of Police Officers, Ventilatory department Officials, and Health Department Officials. “They were entrusted with disposing of this beef with the approval of the Court,” Ravikumar explained.

The Disposal occurred in December 2021.

Earlier this month, Animal Rights Activist Hunachiraya Moragi filed a Complaint with Home Minister Araga Jnanendra and Higher-Level Police personnel, claiming Theft in Disposal. It is claimed that Cops improperly disposed of the confiscated beef from the cold storage without the Court’s Permission.

“The claim is that the whole beef supply was not destroyed, and that part was diverted.” We shall await the report before taking action against those involved,” he continued.

In another incidence, the Bantwal town Police Station in Dakshina Kannada district apprehended a guy on Sunday on suspicion of bringing beef on a motorcycle and attempting to sell it without the necessary permissions.

Muhammad Mustafa (31), the guy in Prison, was Apprehended near Goodinabali train station. The Police seized the Accused’s motorcycle, and around 18 kg of beef was discovered in his hands.

In September, the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Protection of Cattle Bill was enacted in the Legislative Council, securing a virtually total Ban on beef in the State. In December, the Parliamentary Assembly enacted an Anti-Cow Slaughter Measure.

Cow slaughter is a Punishable Offence, with Penalties ranging from three to seven years in Jail for Offenders. While the First Offence can result in a Penalty of between 50,000 and 5 lakhs, the second and subsequent Offences can result in Fines ranging between 1 lakh and 10 lakhs.
