Deeksha Sood –
The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned by two weeks the hearing on the applications filed by the political party Indian Union Muslim league challenging the 28th May notification issued by Ministry of Home Affairs allowing non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to apply for citizenship.
On 28th May 2021 the Centre issued a notification which stated the collectors of the districts
- Morbi , Rajkot, Patan and Vadodara in the State of Gujarat
- Durg & Balodabazar in the state of Chhattisgarh
- Faridabad in the State of Haryana
- Jalandhar in the State of Punjab , have been empowered to exercise the powers of the Central Government under Section 5 for registration as a citizen of India or grant of certificate of naturalisation under Section 6.
The refugees who belonged to the minority communities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh (Hindus, Jains, Parsis, Christians and Buddhists) will get the benefit of the notification.
The Indian union Muslim league challenged this in an interlocutory application which contends that, ‘’The respondent union in a roundabout way and in an attempt to circumvent the assurance given to this Hon’ble Court, have sought to implement their mala fide designs envisaged under the Citizenship Amendment act through the recently issued order dated 28th May 2021.”
