A National Investigation Agency (NIA) court cleared the charges framed on the MLA Akhil Gogoi in one of two cases against him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The cases filed against him were for his active participation in violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam.

NIA is investigating two such cases against Akhil Gogoi.

Pranjal Das, NIA Special Judge did not frame charges against Gogoi, in connection to the case registered in Chabua police station for which he was arrested in December, 2019.

Gogoi’s counsel said that “He has been discharged in one case. It means charges have not been framed against him. The hearing in the other case is going on.”

Charges were framed against his third associate Bhaskarjyoti Phukan. The charges weren’t framed under the UAPA  but under Section 144 of the IPC.

The case has been transferred to the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Dibrugarh, Assam.
