Kerala MPs write to CJI over worsening health of detained journalist Siddique Kappan

Eleven Kerala MPs have written to the Chief Justice of India requesting speedy hearing and interim relief for Delhi-based journalist Siddique Kappan.

The journalist was arrested by the UP government on his way to cover the Hathras rape case on the allegations of planning to stir caste and religious trouble in Uttar Pradesh.

The letter urged to shift Kappan from Mathura Medical College and Hospital to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) due to his deteriorating health conditions.

The diabetic journalist has been diagnosed to be Covid-19 positive.

The letter further mentioned, “Unable to consume food and with denied right to a toilet for four days, he (Kappan) has become extremely weak. It is shocking beyond words that such grave violation of human rights is happening in out India, a democracy”.

Kappan’s wife, Raihanath Siddique also filed a petition to the CJI stating that her husband has been tied to a cot in a hospital like a chained animal where his jaw bons has been allegedly fractured.

Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan also wrote to his UP-counterpart seeking his intervention in the matter.

His letter states, “It is reported that he (Siddique) is having diabetes and heart ailments. After getting infected with Covid-19, he has been admitted to KVM Hospital, Mathura. He is reportedly being kept chained to his bed even when his health condition is precarious. Expert health care is necessary for him, may also be seriously considered by shifting him to another super speciality hospital, where modern life saving facilities are ensured.”
