Kapurthala lynching case: Gurudwara’s caretaker being arrested for Murder

Gurudwara caretaker, Amarjit Singh was booked on Murder charges and was arrested. The arrest was made after lack of proof of sacrilege in the December 19, 2021 incident of lynching of a youth in the district of Kapurthala.

The arrest came into effect after the statement given by Chief Minister of Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi. He stated, “The youth was lynched. The investigation is pointing towards a murder. We will modify the FIR accordingly.”

The arrest was made by the Kapurthala police five days after the incident of lynching of the youth. The police have registered a case of Murder, attempt to Murder, Assault police officials on duty and few other offences. The provisions of Arms Act have also been added as the Police recovered a pistol on the day of murder.

Amarjit tried to raise bogey of attempt of sacrilege and the youth was caught by him. He was also responsible for informing the police late and refusing to hand over the youth to the police. A mob of 100 people had attacked the youth after Amarjit alleged that the youth was caught while he was about to desecrate their religious flag. Of the 100 people, around 25-30 were believed to be armed.

A group of Sikh youths broke the window and entered the room and attacked the youth with swords and killed him in the presence of police.

The facts that Amarjit has close relations with few senior police officials and that his son is an Assistant Sub-inspector in State Intelligence department have also emerged.

The post-mortem of the deceased took place where it has been found that 30 injuries were suffered by him, mostly deep and sharp cuts which are suspected to be inflicted by a sword.
