On Wednesday, a plea has been filed by the Bar Council of India (BCI) requesting for Specialized Security Forces under the authority of the Judiciary to grant protection to Judges and Court premises instead of absolute reliance on State Police Personnel.

The BCI has opposed the Centre’s stand in an Affidavit filed in the Apex Court that a Special Unit within the Police Force be allocated and maintained that the judiciary should create an independent force under its authority and should not be dependent on Government and Police Force for this reason.

BCI stated that Article 146 of the Constitution gives immense scope to the Supreme Court to assign and administer the Specialized Security Force within the dominance and guidance of the Judiciary and not the Executive while referring to the killing of a Judge in Jharkhand as well as the atrocity committed intermittently within the court premises across the country, furthermore confrontation between Lawyers and Police.

In the Affidavit, it is specified that the Indian Parliament has its Specialized Security System, moreover, the Secretariat governs the security set up in the Parliament House Complex. On the same edge, there can be Judicial Security Service set up in the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Subordinate Courts requested the BCI.

The Apex Court took suo moto cognizance and expedited the proceedings on the PIL filed and sought response from all states after the incident of the murder of Jharkhand.
