India Revamps Laws to Align with Contemporary Realities: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its laws, shedding antiquated regulations inherited from colonial times. 

Speaking at the Commonwealth Attorneys and Solicitors General Conference 2024, PM Modi noted the replacement of century-old colonial criminal laws with three new legislations. Over the past few years, India has eliminated thousands of obsolete laws, streamlining its legal framework.

PM Modi acknowledged the colonial-era legal system inherited by India and underscored recent reforms. 

The Commonwealth conference, attended by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, focused on “Cross-Border Challenges in Justice Delivery.” 

PM Modi emphasized the importance of collaboration among nations to enhance mutual understanding of legal systems, fostering better and faster justice delivery.

Recognizing the need for a contemporary approach to address 21st-century challenges, PM Modi urged a rethink, reimagining, and reform of legal systems. He highlighted India’s special relationship with the African Union, noting its inclusion in the G20 during India’s presidency. 

The conference, with participants from Commonwealth nations across Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Caribbean, aims to facilitate dialogue on legal education and transnational justice delivery, providing a comprehensive roadmap for the future.
