The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a status report in the Hathras gang rape and murder case before the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow Bench. The court had taken suo motu cognisance of the occurrence a year ago.
The court has listed the matter for further hearing to March 19, 2021.
The status report was documented on February 19, 2021, in a fixed envelope in the court of judges Rajan Roy and Jaspreet Singh. CBI attorney Anurag Singh notified the court of the investigation process and results to date within the presence of senior supporter Jaideep Narain Mathur, who has been designated amicus curiae for the said case.
Additional Attorney General Vinod Kumar Shahi was representing the Uttar Pradesh Government.
On September 14, 2021, a 19-year-old Dalit girl was purportedly assaulted and raped by four individuals in the Hathras area when she had gone to the fields to gather steers feed. She alluded to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital in a very critical condition where she passed away after fourteen days on September 29, 2021.
There were public outrage and outcry over the manner in which the body was sent back to Hathras and incinerated late at night without the family’s permission.
The Supreme Court likewise directed the Allahabad high court to look into the investigation concerning the Hathras gang rape case.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, presided by CJI SA Bobde, felt it proper that the High Court looked into the case as it was at that point inspecting a suo motu investigation proceeding on the “rushed incineration” of the girl.
The CBI, in December 2020, accused four men of assault and murder, following the results of its thorough investigation and from the dying declaration statement from the girl, dismissing prior proclamations by state government authorities and the police that contested the assault.
