A special Court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Ranchi today convicted former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav to jail term and penalised him Rs 60 lakh for illegally withdrawing 139.5 crores from the Doranda Treasury.

On February 15, Special CBI Judge CK Shashi found him guilty in fifth fodder scam case against him. An FIR was filed in this case in 1996 at Ranchi’s Doranda police station. The case was later taken over by the CBI.

Yadav was found guilty under Sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471 r/w 120B of the Indian Penal Code and Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Yadav is currently enrolled at RIMS, and at the time of the sentence announcement, he participated in the court proceedings via video conferencing.

The CBI presented documents indicating that Lalu Yadav, who was the Chief Minister of State at the time, did not take any action despite being aware of the situation. It was claimed that for many years, he was also the state’s finance minister, and that the base amount was only withdrawn with his approval on the basis of forged bills.

This is the final of the five Fodder scam cases in which Lalu Yadav has been charged. Lalu Yadav was sentenced to seven years in two separate cases of Chaibasa treasury, five years in the case of illegal withdrawal from Dumka treasury, and four years each in the case of illegal withdrawal from Deoghar treasury in the remaining four cases.

In all four cases, Lalu Yadav has served half of his sentence while incarcerated.
