On 12th January, the Supreme Court passed an interim stay order on the implementation of the new farm laws.
The order was passed in order to get the protesting farmers to talk to the Central government to resolve the dispute.
The bench comprising Chief Justice S.A. Bobde, Justice A.S.Bopanna and Justice V. Ramasubramanian expressed their disappointment on the government’s inability to resolve the issue.
The Court was further disturbed at the decreasing temperature and the increase in the number of suicide cases by the farmers during the ongoing pandemic.
Senior Advocate Harish Salve during the hearing mentioned the submission of the application which ensured that Republic Day would go unblemished.
On the other hand, the Farmers Unions that are leading the protests welcomed the Court’s intervention but have stuck to their original demands of the law being repealed.
Advocate ML Sharma, representing the farmers explicitly mentioned that the farmers would not appear before any committee as the government has the authority to withdraw the laws.
Chief Justice S.A. Bobde insisted ongoing before the committee to solve the problem and asked for their corporation in the same.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also insisted on the formation of the committee.
Chief Justice S.A. Bobde then stated that the suspension of the law would talk place in an indefinite manner thereby asking for the submission before the committee.
After constant arguments on the same, the Court put a stay on the order until further orders and concluded the members of the committee.
The committee would consist of Bhupinder Singh Mann, President BKU, Dr Pramod KumarJoshi, International policy head, Ashok Gulati, Agricultural Economist, and Anil Dhanvat, Shivkeri Sangathna, Maharashtra.
