Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, a Judge in the Supreme Court and Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), in collaboration with the National Commission for Women, New Delhi, 247 literacy camps were organized by the District Legal Services Authorities from July 12 to July 31, 2023.

These camps focused on women’s welfare, providing guidance to 18,000 women about their rights, empowerment, and the welfare schemes offered by the Government of India and state governments to lead dignified lives.

The closing ceremony of this program took place on August 6, 2023, at the J.T.R.I. auditorium in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow.

Chief Justice Mr. Pritinkar Diwakar, Chief Justice of the High Court Allahabad and Chief Patron of the Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority, and Smt.

Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, New Delhi, were present at the event, along with other dignitaries and officials.

Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of women’s rights and empowerment.

He highlighted the broadened scope of the National Legal Services Authority, aiming to settle disputes through conciliation to reduce the burden on the courts.

Justice Kaul stressed the need for societal development, which can only be achieved by uplifting all sections of society. He emphasized the significance of the rule of law and regular legal aid and awareness programs.

Referring to the constitutional principle of equality before the law, he called for the equitable treatment of women and stressed the importance of education and awareness in empowering women. Additionally, he urged the implementation of schemes and judicial decisions for the benefit of prisoners.

Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, expressed her belief that meaningful women empowerment can only happen when women are aware of their legal rights and have a thorough understanding of the law.

Chief Justice Pritinkar Diwakar thanked all the attendees and urged the audience to abandon conservative thinking that deprives women of their rights and treats them as mere property.

He appreciated the role of the National Commission for Women and acknowledged the progress being made in the upliftment of women, including their increasing participation in judicial services.
