The Delhi High Court on Wednesday disposed of a Petition raising a grievance that the titular character ‘Prithviraj’ in the Bollywood film starring Akshay Kumar is portrayed as a Rajput when he was, in fact, a Gujjar.

The Plea was disposed of after the Bench recorded the statement of the producer’s counsel that the movie is caste neutral and the king is depicted as an Indian.

The Bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Sachin Datta recorded the statement of the producer’s counsel that the movie is caste neutral and the king is depicted as an Indian.

“The film is caste neutral and intention is to showcase the titular character as an Indian king,” the Counsel for producers Yash Raj Films submitted.

On this statement, the Petitioner Counsel requested the Court to recorded the statement as an undertaking.

It was the Petitioner’s contention that the movie was based on a poem by Chand Bardai “Prithviraj Raso”. The historical texts also pointed out, the Counsel stated that Chauhan’s father was a Gujjar.

Counsel for Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) pointed out that the film depicted the king as caste neutral.

The CBFC counsel also stated that if the film was made with an intention to be neutral, they would not have foreseen that such issues would arise.

Meanwhile, the producers’ Counsel stated that there was another Petition filed objection to the depiction the character as a Gujjar and due to such petitions “the producers were stuck in the middle”.

The Court eventually recorded the producer’s statement and the Plea was disposed of.
