The Delhi High Court ordered the Delhi Government on Friday to examine the question of allowing restaurants and bars in the National Capital to serve and sell Herbal Hukkahs.

Justice Rekha Palli was hearing the petitions of several restaurants and bars who were concerned about the Delhi Government’s and Delhi Police’s alleged involvement in the sale of Herbal Hukkahs in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The petitioners were contesting an Order passed by the Joint Commissioner of Police, prohibiting the sale and service of Herbal Hukkahs in bars and restaurants.

The Court stated, “When you are opening other activities and they (Petitioners) are willing to undertake, then you have to take a decision. Livelihoods also have to be balanced.”

Santosh Kumar Tripathi appearing for the Delhi Government argued, “Entire Delhi will pay a price for opening of Hukkah bars. We’re having our masks on while we’re driving in the car, sitting alone. How can we enable the serving of Hukkah in bars?”

Accordingly, the Court granted time to the Delhi Government to issue directions on the matter.

The matter will be heard next on September 30.
