Kalkaji Temple in Delhi, in daylight

Snehal Upadhyay-

Delhi High Court has appointed a local commissioner and directed him to make surprise visits in Kalkaji Temple in respect of ascertaining conduct of ‘Puja Sewa’, collection of offerings being put in donation boxes and also other issues regarding cleanliness, hygiene and facilities for devotees.

A single bench of Justice Pratibha M Singh was hearing a report submitted by a local commissioner. The reports showed “unsatisfactory” cleanliness and hygiene conditions in the temple for the devotees.

The Court observed that “Cleanliness of the temple, as also the provision of civic amenities for devotees is a major concern.”

The Court noted that there were three major concerns about Kalkaji Temple. Firstly, renovation of temple premises, secondly legal issues regarding Puja Sewa rights amongst various groups including the right of women to conduct Puja Sewa and thirdly, allocation of revenue from shopkeepers, tehbazari holders and dharmshalas.

The Court directed the appointed local commissioner to file a report two days before the date of the next hearing. The case will further be heard on 3rd August.
