A Delhi Court is expected to rule on the filing of charges against Congress Chief Shashi Tharoor in the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.
On the night of January 17, 2014, Sunanda was found dead in a luxurious hotel in the national capital. Since her bungalow was being restored at the time, she and Tharoor were staying in the hotel.
Earlier this month, Special Judge Geetanjli Goel, who is expected to deliver the order today, heard claims from lawyers representing the Delhi Police and Shashi Tharoor.
At the previous trial, police sought the framing of multiple charges against the Congress Chief, including section 306 (abetment of suicide).
However, Tharoor’s lawyer, senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, told the court that the SIT’s investigation exonerated the politician of all the allegations levelled against him.
Pahwa had sought Tharoor’s release from the case, claiming that there was no proof against him to prove the crime punishable under IPC sections 498A (husband or spouse of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) or section 306 (abetment of suicide).
Tharoor had previously been arrested by Delhi police under sections 498A and 306 of the Indian Penal Code but had not been charged.
