The Centre has sought some time from the Delhi High Court to respond to their notice regarding acclaimed Kathak artist, Birju Maharaj’s petition against him being told to vacate his government allotted accommodation.

A single judge bench of Justice Prathiba Singh had adjourned the case for further hearing on April 19th after the HC stayed notice of vacating the house from the centre December last year in the last hearing.

Three other artists, Bharati Shivaji and V Jayarama Rao, and Banarasi Rao, of the 27 artists who were told to vacate their government allotted homes withdrew their petitions.

The homes were given to Maharaj and 27 other artists on basis of their cultural merit. The ministry had justified their stance on this by saying that the artists had crossed their allotted time period and that there were even cases of families living in these homes after the artist died.
