Calcutta HC directs CID to file status report on Sitalkuchi Firing

The Calcutta High Court, on Friday, sought the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to submit a report on the progress of investigation into the firing by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at Sitalkuchi.

The firing took place during the West Bengal assembly polls which had caused the death of four persons (Aminuddin Khan v. Union of India).

The division bench comprising Chief Justice T.B.N. Radhakrishnan and Justice Arijit Banerjee on hearing two separate public interest litigations seeking a judicial probe ordered an issue directing CID of West Bengal to place a report before it by May 5.

The order was passed on Friday stating, “Now investigation is being carried on by the CID of the State of West Bengal. We record these submissions. We expect a statement to be placed on record by the CID as to the progress of the investigation by the next date of hearing.”

CISF personnel, on April 10, deployed at Amtali MSK booth at Jorpatki had opened fire on a section of villagers during the fourth phase of the Assembly elections.

The Election Commission had deferred voting at the polling station after the violence.

The petitioners besides seeking a judicial probe had also sought adequate compensation from the election commission to the families of the victims.

The Bengal government’s counsel informed the court that the state administration had already expressed its desire to provide compensation to the grieving families.

The Court after recording the same adjourned the case for further consideration on May 5 while asking CID to submit a status report on the probe.
