Snehal Upadhyay-
Bombay High Court disposed of actor Kangana Ranaut’s applications for giving directions to the Passport Authority to renew her passport.
A division bench comprising Justices SS Shinde and Revati Mohite Dere heard the present petition.
The actor reported that her passport is due to expire on 15th September 2021. Therefore, it needs to be renewed, so she could go to Hungary and finish her scheduled shooting for her upcoming Hindi movie ‘Dhakkad.’
The council of Passport Authority asked Kangana to provide a statement confirming that no criminal case is pending against her, which she did provide. However, the council claims that there are two FIRs filed against her and no Court proceedings have been initiated yet.
The Passport Authority’s Additional Solicitor General, Anil Singh submitted that the facts mentioned by the actor were indeed wrong. He said only FIRs were pending against her, not ‘criminal cases’.
The ASG further stated that the Passport Authority is willing to consider her application for renewal of her passport in conformity with the Passport Act and its rules and procedures.
The actor’s counsel then stated that no cases were pending against her. However, there were two FIRs that were filed against her.
While disposing of the petition the bench said that “the application filed by the petitioner for renewal of passport will be decided as expeditiously as possible, following the relevant provisions of the Passport Act/rules/procedures.”
