The Andhra Pradesh High Court instructed the State government to take measures to control and prevent the cockfights that take place during the celebration of Makar Sankranti in the State.

A Public Interest Litigation was filed by S K Saleem requesting the court to instruct the authorities concerned to take steps to prevent cockfights.

A division bench consisting Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice A Venkata Sesha Sai explicitly stated on 7th January that the directions issued by the court earlier regarding the cockfights must be implemented.

They stated that they would further hear the PIL and a contempt petition filed which states that the officials failed to adhere to the court order issued earlier.

The bench adjourned the matter for hearing after 8 weeks.
