On Sunday, the Supreme Court of Nepal issued an Interim Order prohibiting the demolition of the poet laureate Laxmi Prasad Devkota’s home.
Devkota’s residence is of archaeological significance, a Joint Bench of Justices Anil Kumar Sinha and Bam Kumar Shrestha issued an Interim Order to work in conjunction with the Department of Archeology.
After Mahakavi Devkota’s house in Maiti Devi, Kathmandu was demolished, a Writ suit was filed in the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court has ordered that Devkota’s residence be protected as a historically significant site by the relevant government authorities.
Devkota’s residence was already started to be demolished by the Nepal Academy. Devkota’s residence may have housed some archaeological items, according to the report.
In Nepal, the Pragya Pratishthan is planning to demolish Devkota’s house and replace it with a new one.
Since archaeological material could be saved in Devkota’s house, the Supreme Court ordered that it to be demolished only in consultation with the archaeological department.
After the Nepal Academy began demolishing the 80-year-old house of Devkota to establish a museum, a Writ Petition was filed against it. The Government purchased his residence for Rs 25 million.
