The Supreme Court of Pakistan on 1st February, Monday extended the detention period of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh for 24 hours.
He has been a suspect in the Daniel Pearl Murder case in 2002. On 28th January his kidnapping convictions were left in place and the man was ordered to be released as he had already served the kidnapping charges sentence.
On Monday this decision was announced after an appeal was filed by the Sindh government requesting the court to review the decision taken.
During the court proceedings, Attorney General of Pakistan Khalid Jawed Khan informed the court that the High Court has passed the order to release the suspect without considering the petition that was filed by the federal government.
In December the Sindh High Court set aside the Sindh government’s detention order passed, however, Khalid Jawed Khan stated that , “The federal government has not been made a party in the Sindh High Court.”
He further requested the Supreme Court to suspend the High Court’s decision so that he could argue the case in detail but the court refused to entertain his request and the bench stated that the government position in the case would be heard on 2nd February (tomorrow).
Therefore, the matter was adjourned for the day.
