The Supreme Court of India on October 29th issued directions in Suo Motu Case in the matter of re: contagion of Covid-19 in the Children Protection Homes to all States Governments on the status report regarding rehabilitation of street children.

Division Bench of Justice Nageswara Rao and B.R Gavai directed all the State Governments and Union Territories to file the status reports of their implementation of Standard Operating Procedure for Care and Protection of Children in Street Situation prepared by in 2020.

NCPCR chairman Priyank Kanungo stated “We are confident with the Court’s Order now, more States will come up with their own plans.”

Before the Covid outbreak in India, they had received mapping of about two lakhs children in 10 cities of four States in India, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, whose rights to protection, education, health, water, sanitation, and urban development and welfare were not addressed so far.

The Bench further directed that the Draft SOP which was submitted by the Amicus Curiae and Ms.Anitha Shenoy and Ms.Sristi Agnihotri (Counsel for the Petitioners) be sent to State Governments and all the High Courts for their further comments.

It also directed that all the Responses be Filed within a period of two weeks.

The matter is next to be heard on 15th November at 2pm.
