SC asks for Centre’s Response on Compensation to Families of COVID Victims

Supreme Court on May 24 sought a response from the Centre on a plea seeking compensation of Rupees 4 Lakhs to the families of those who have died from COVID 19.

A vacation bench comprising of Justices M R Shah and Ashok Bhushan demanded that the Centre place ICMR( Indian Council of Medical Research) guidelines on the issuance of death certificates for COVID 19 victims before it and stated that a uniform policy should be made for issuance of such documents.

The Supreme Court was hearing two different pleas which sought directions to the Centre and States to give compensation of 4 lakh rupees to the Kin of the COVID 19 victims as provisioned in the Disaster Management Act and for formulation of a uniform policy for issuance of death certificates.

The bench also stated that the kin of the victims would not be able to avail benefits of any compensation scheme rendered if a uniform policy for issuance of such official documents such as a death certificate is not formulated.

The bench listed the matter for further hearing on June 11 and asked Centre to file the reply.
