B. Tech Students move Kerala HC against Kerala University to Seek Directions for Conducting Supplementary Exams

A writ petition has been filed in the Kerala High Court, requesting that the Kerala University conduct supplementary exams in engineering programmes as soon as possible for the 2013-17 and 2014-18 batches and publish all pending results within a month.

Varun Gopal and Amal Joseph, both B. Tech students from colleges previously associated with the Kerala University filed a complaint with the Court, citing the University’s unwillingness to address their issues.

The petition, which was filed by Advocate Arun Samuel, detailed the issues that students experience when it comes to back papers. It added that over 500 of these students from their batches were awaiting supplemental tests and results, without which their job prospects would be jeopardized.

In 2014, certain engineering colleges previously connected with Kerala University were transferred to the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. As a consequence, students from the 2013-17 and 2014-18 batches continued their studies at Kerala University.

Supplementary exams were supposed to be held in April-May 2020, but they were postponed indefinitely owing to COVID-19’s first wave. Furthermore, it was said that due to the second wave of the pandemic, only four of the nine supplemental tests scheduled for April 2021 were held.

The petitioners were also concerned by the fact that just 41 of the 84 tests scheduled to be held had been completed thus far.

They said that the epidemic had already taken a significant amount of time away from them and that any further delay in completing these supplementary tests and announcing their results would have a significant impact on their careers.

The petitioners also stated that a few students had previously addressed the High Court, alleging university’s refusal to hold supplemental tests, which were held in 2020, as a result of the Court’s ruling. The results of these tests, however, are yet to be revealed.

The petitioners requested that the B.Tech Regulations be declared binding on the Kerala University for the 2013-2017 and 2014-2018 batches and that they be directed to perform all additional exams and publish all results, including those that are still waiting, as soon as feasible.
